The Law is a White Dog -- Some Preliminary Thoughts

As I've been reading the book, I've been thinking a lot about the differences between punishment, rehabilitation, and incapacitation. Dayan offers such a horrifying and desolate account of life in Supermax and other detention facilities and it's really lead me to think about the ways in which punishment can be cruel and unusual...and yet also non-violent. What pain is created when one is deprived of human connection, information, and outside air and light? Can it be quantified? How does that pain compare to the pains of more traditional punishments? Can these experiences of deprivation, which have been administered clinically and institutionally, be compared to the wide range of practices that comprised enslavement?
